Wahoo kickr repair

I am Happy, no issues. Took a while to sort out, was frustrated and kind of dissapointed initially, but a year on I can honestly say I am thrilled.

Well worth the money. I tried another brand and still came back. Hoping they get this figured out also. Never made it past a month without failure. Second week with my third unit of the I just upgraded from a Snap to the Kickr I did 2 rides on it and then it developed the infamous knocking sound. I made this decision for a few reasons:. What I bought it for was an upgrade on my Snap. The Kickr is an improvement over the Snap, no question.

Over the life of the trainer, the countless TR workouts, the pain and suffering, a couple of days of annoyance and disappointment will seem like nothing. The Wahoo Support Group is full of people who are enjoying using their Kickr 18; people who have not had a need to fix the trainer and those that have. Sure, will provide an update. Here is the email from Wahoo after reporting the issue with the options:.

The cause of these noises is mainly due to one component being slightly outside of the tolerance on the small end. The noise would become readily apparent if your component was out of tolerance. This is not a component that wears down under normal use or falls out of tolerance. As mentioned before, if you are not experiencing this noise after an initial few uses then you are unlikely to experience this problem going forward.

For you to experience this issue on normally functioning unit will require a steel rectangle to uniformly and proportionally shrink a small amount of NM. We will offer the repair kits for all of our users. Considering the parts involved with the repair kit, I doubt being able to access the kit at a future date will be an issue.

Edited: I take it back. I have an early serial number. I plug it in, turn on TR and go. No issues to report at all. It features dozens and dozens of people with videos showing loud clicking and other noise from faulty trainers. I Purchased a Kickr in August of this year. I am on my second Kickr Core, first one was duff with a loud clanging noise. Second one seems a lot better. As well as a bit of clarity on exactly how many people or percentage of the units this impacted.

Whereas most with perfectly functional units continue about their daily life unaware. Instead, we ended up filming a video via Skype call a few days ago — with one of the Wahoo engineers present plus CEO Chip Hawkins to detail the issues and the fixes Wahoo has put in place.

Instead, I generally prefer to provide a bit of background, and then ask some starter questions and let companies discuss the technology themselves. With a few more clarifying questions tossed in. After which, I give some closing thoughts. Again, I realize a minute video is a bit long for some to watch, but I personally prefer listening to a company explain the details of an issue and how it came about, than a 2-minute canned PR piece.

Wahoo has provided a self-repair kit you can get from support. Your choice. Wahoo implemented this fix the week of Sept 24th, units made after thathowever, keep in mind that it takes about four weeks on the water by ship before units hit distribution centers.

And then more time before they hit retailers, and finally more time before they end up in your living room. Quick and easy. Wahoo has a detailed PDF as well for this. This is the result of electrostatic discharge ESD that results in killing the onboard chip responsible for that. Totally dead killing, no half-deaths here. The first step is switching to new power supplies the power brick thing you plug in the wall with discharge grounding.

11 Things I Wish I'd Known About Zwift

This should help most people. They even have a nifty picture to tell them apart with green and red text. In particular though, the death by ESD bit is heavily environmentally weighted. Trainer dead. Whereas if I was back in Washington DC, my living room there likely would have killed units like no tomorrow. A few people have asked since posting the video about a few other random issues.

For the most part the above issues where the vast majority of what I heard from folks over the last while.Hopefully not a third in three months? And yes, like that, my local store after seeing the second video, swapped it out without hesitation. My Kickr 18 made a weird sound, they proposed to make it myself by sending parts but i said no and send it back. The last thing I would hope a customer would have to do, especially 30 days after ownership, is being sent parts to repair a device like this.

The Tacx Neo was my next choice.

The third that showed up on my radar was the Cycleops H2. They apparently chanced build facilities along with the new pulley and belt design for the Kickr and Core.

This has lead to some teething pains. They obviously did a production run to have stock on hand at release, and these are the units we are seeing with the issues. But I think they are on their way to returning to good and consistent product. Keep in mind that all of these trainer makers have had well documented issues. Tacx had some serious issues with the Neo and Flux release.

It took them a while to resolve each one, but they seem to be on top of those problems now. Point being, no company is immune from small or even large scale issues.

I have a super hard time sending something out for approximately a week the rain is set in here in the northwest and not ready to take a week off from riding that is 30 days old for repair. I absolutely know every manufacture can have kinks, you buy the latest and greatest, you might have to deal with these issues, to a degree. This can be especially true for new products, design, mfg facilities, etc.

That fact is one reason I waited to pull the trigger on the K Turns out I got lucky with my guess, so I am watching closely to see if and when I am comfortable to jump into a purchase.

My reason for posting here was also to get a little reaffirmation, I thought I heard people prior to this version having good luck with them. My first guess would have been manufacturing issues but we all know what happens when you make assumptions. This vendor basically takes a loss on the difference it gets back from the garage sale. I ordered my Kickr directly from Wahoo and it shipped to me from the factory warehouse in Taiwan. Got it mid September so been using it a month now.

So hopefully it is a recent build with these issues all resolved. Mostly about workouts a week on it since then. No issues so far. My first was August 18th, second was September 19th, third is October 28th. Around 6 hours a week or more, 5 days a week. So roughly four weeks or 24 hours of use till i started hearing the bearings. If this third lasts more than four weeks, i might be in the clear. Not too optimistic.JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser.

If cleaning is needed, clear any debris and use a moist, soft cloth to wipe surfaces, avoiding dripping moisture into any part of the KICKR itself.

Select a stable, level surface with sufficient room for trainer and bike. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.

Open the legs by pressing down on the blue leg-lock tabs and pivoting the legs outward until they snap into place. Failure to secure legs may result in bodily harm or damage. Once opened, adjust the two leveling feet under the legs, turning until the trainer is level. Lock them into place by tightening the blue locknuts against the leg frame. Warning: always check trainer stability before riding and re-adjust leveling feet as needed. Use the adjustment knob on the center leg to select your specific wheel size.

Most road bikes use mm spacing, while cyclocross and mountain bikes with quick release skewers and disc brakes use mm spacing. Please reverse the spacer before mounting a bicycle with mm spacing or use the appropriate adapter for wider hub spacing and thru-axle bikes.

Remove your rear wheel, beginning by shifting into the smallest rear cog and smallest front chainring. Release your rear brake before opening the quick release lever or removing the thru axle, if applicablethen lift the frame while lightly pushing down on the rear wheel to remove it. Lower the frame over trainer axle, ensuring the chain falls onto the smallest cog. The axle should slide easily into place.

Rock the frame back and forth to ensure the dropouts are fully seated on the skewer.Sit the bike on the trainer straight A common mistake is not to make sure the bike is sitting on the trainer nice and straight. To check this, undo the quick release and rock the bike from side to side a bit until you can definitely feel that it is sitting on both sides of the axle.

If you have one of the old black quick releases with the external cam, lube every moving part or ideally replace it with a quick release from Shimano, Campagnolo or the steel ones that come with many trainers the newer, chrome KICKR quick release is great. Your bike and your trainer will love you for it. An easy first step to reducing this noise is to lube your chain. Stuck in the wrong gear? This will give you time to change down while not under load. Cassette spacing Depending on the cassette being used, this can be out by enough to make gears that work well on the bike sound like a noisy bag of bolts on the KICKR.

Before you measure anything, make sure the central bolt that holds the cassette body in place is firmly tight. The measurement in the photo below should be the same on the KICKR as the wheel that came out of the bike. With 11 speed transmissions, anything over about 0. Often the gap is a bit too big, so adding a 1. Gear hanger alignment This is often the tweak that makes the biggest difference. To straighten this you need a proper gear alignment tool.

Do not attempt to straighten the hanger with anything else. Good tips. It took a bit of fettling before I could get the shifting just right.

I have just changed my back wheel for a non-asymmetric rim so I need to change the Kickr spacing by a hair. The biggest problem the Kickr showed up was a gritty bottom bracket bearing. Not noticeable on road but definitely stuffed on inspection with the cranks off. I had a rough sound coming from the inside of the kickr and mentioned it to wahoo at the TDU. Since then Wahoo sent me one of the links below for tensioning the unit.

The tensioning video is a good one. The belt is actually a Gates brand timing belt, originally for use in car engines. There is a code number on the belt. Your videos look amazing! Will be buying a Kickr soon, but have Android phone. When will your app be ready on Windows? Anything happening in the near future with an online cycling environment in where we could actually pick the location using Google Maps — Street view?

I replaced my stock Kickr cassette with a Shimano Ultegrawhich is similar to what I have on my bikes either Dura-Ace or Ultegra or I found that my bikes shifted a lot better after doing this, smoother, less noise and clicking, etc. What irritates me now is the grinding noise. This has always been the case.
